Lions' Stafford, Johnson shine in Thanksgiving opener

The Detroit Lions, bolstered by standout performances from Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson, carved up (sorry) the Chicago Bears 34-17 in Thursday's Thanksgiving opener.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Johnson finally looked comfortable out there after weeks of struggling through an ankle injury. Megatron caught 11 passes for 146 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also became the fastest receiver to 10,000 receiving yards in NFL history.
  • Stafford completed 34-of-45 passes for 390 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions' pigskin cannon did most of his damage in the first half, completing 22-of-26 passes for 275 yards and both touchdown tosses.
  • No Reggie Bush? No problem. Running back Joique Bell ran roughshod over the Bears defense, rushing for 91 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.
  • Bears quarterback Jay Cutler started strong, but in the end had a forgettable turkey day. Cutler completed 31-of-48 passes for 280 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was also sacked three times.
  • Martellus Bennett had a solid game in a losing cause, hauling in eight passes for 109 yards, while Alshon Jeffery caught nine balls for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
  • The Bears couldn't generate any offense from the backfield, with Cutler, Matt Forte and Ka'Deem Carey combining for 13 yards rushing. That total ties the team's lowest since the NFL/AFL merger in 1970.
  • Forte did gain 52 receiving yards, breaking the franchise's single-season record for most receiving yards by a running back.
