Report: Redskins plan to start Colt McCoy over RG3 on Sunday vs. Colts

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Redskins are planning to start Colt McCoy over Robert Griffin III at quarterback Sunday versus the Indianapolis Colts, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

McCoy is 2-0 this season, including a win in Dallas over the rival Cowboys. Head coach Jay Gruden is probably hoping he can give the Redskins offense a spark.

Washington has lost three straight games and Griffin went just 11-of-19 for 106 yards in Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He has managed only two touchdown passes in five games this season.

Despite the switch, Schefter notes that Griffin is still in the Redskins long-term plans. Gruden was hired to help polish his game and although that hasn't happened yet, they don't appear ready to give up on Griffin.

If Griffin is indeed the franchise quarterback for this team he will need to stay healthy. He's already suffered a major knee injury and a dislocated ankle in his three-year career, and takes far too many big hits.

The Redskins have a first-round pick this spring for the first time since 2012, so Washington can continue to add pieces around their quarterback if they so choose. Considering they gave up three first-rounders themselves to get Griffin, ending the experiment now may be premature.
