Rams stun wounded Broncos

The St. Louis Rams pulled off an upset against the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon, defeating the AFC powerhouse 22-7.

It was a particularly rough afternoon for the Broncos' offense, as wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, tight end Julius Thomas, and running back Montee Ball were all forced from the game due to injury.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Ball left the game in the second quarter after re-aggravating the groin injury that had sidelined him for the past five weeks. Thomas also exited in the second quarter with an ankle injury.
  • Sanders was taken to the locker room after taking a big hit from Rams safety Rodney McLeod, who was flagged for an illegal hit to the head of a defenseless player. Tests revealed that Sanders suffered a concussion.
  • Peyton Manning completed 34-of-54 passes for 389 yards with one touchdown and two interception. It was his 49th consecutive game with a touchdown pass, five away from Drew Brees' record.
  • Making his first start since the season opener, Rams quarterback Shaun Hill finished the game 20-of-29 for 220 yards and a touchdown.
  • The seven points are the fewest by the Broncos since their 7-3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 17 of the 2011 season. That game marked Tim Tebow's last regular-season start for Denver.
  • Rams running back Tre Mason and wide receiver Kenny Britt had their best games of the season. Mason rushed for 113 yards on 29 carries while Britt caught four passes for 128 yards and a touchdown.
  • Despite the loss, the Broncos remain in first place in the AFC West at 7-3. The Rams sit in last place in the NFC West at 4-6.
