AFC West Notebook: Smith breaks own record; Browns rave about Mack

Brace Hemmelgarn / USA TODAY Sports

Every Monday and Friday, theScore's NFL editors will bring you a roundup of everything you need to know from around the division with the AFC West Notebook.

Kansas City Chiefs

Smith on target. Alex Smith broke his own Chiefs record Sunday, completing 24 of 28 passes for a completion percentage of 85.71. After the game, Smith said some of his incompletions should have been completed

Houston on record pace. Pass rusher Justin Houston registered three sacks Sunday, vaulting him into the NFL lead with 10. He's halfway to the Chiefs' team record of 20, set by Derrick Thomas in 1990.

Kelce speaks about juke. Travis Kelce juked a St. Louis Rams defender halfway out of his jock strap Sunday. After the game, Kelce credited his instincts and basketball background for allowing him to make the play.

Oakland Raiders

Browns call Mack a "monster." The Cleveland Browns couldn't get much going in the running game Sunday. Afterward, Browns running back Terrance West credited fellow rookie Khalil Mack for shutting things down on the other side of the ball. "He's a monster," West said. "He's better than I thought."

Carr sets Raiders rookie record. Derek Carr needed only seven games to set a Raiders record for passing touchdowns in a season. His connection with Andre Holmes at the end of Sunday's game was his ninth touchdown of the year, breaking a tie with 2013 rookie Matt McGloin.

0-16 talk heating up. The Raiders aren't yet half done their season, yet talk of the team going winless is starting to pick up steam. ESPN's Bill Williamson says it's not premature to talk about the possibility of the Raiders matching the 2008 Detroit Lions' record for ineptitude.

Denver Broncos

Thomases have lofty demands. The latest reports suggest the Broncos offered Demaryius Thomas a contract worth nearly $13 million per season and he turned it down. Julius Thomas was reportedly offered around $8 million per season. The Broncos are expected to resume contract talks after the season.

Rookie Thompson profiled. The Denver Post has a lengthy and very interesting profile of rookie running back Juwan Thompson, the player who appears poised to handle short-yardage duties behind Ronnie Hillman as long as Montee Ball is sidelined.

Man disappears at Thursday night game. A 53-year-old man was last seen by friends at the Broncos' game last week. His family says he left to use the bathroom at halftime and never returned. Police have no leads

San Diego Chargers

Ohrnberger predicts big things. In a blog post on the Chargers' official website, center Rich Ohrnberger says the Chargers are a family that's built to weather storms and go on to do big things.

Verrett to see specialist. Rookie cornerback Jason Verrett is expected to visit a special this week to examine his injured shoulder. Verrett is expected to miss some time, but how much is unclear.

Gates the greatest. Ricky Henne of the Chargers' website discusses why tight end Antonio Gates is the greatest receiver in Chargers history
