Broncos blowout 49ers on Peyton's record night

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

On a night that saw Peyton Manning take sole possession of one of the NFL's most highly regarded passing records, the Denver Broncos came away with a dominant 42-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers. The victory moves the Broncos to 5-1 and keeps them atop the AFC West, while the 49ers drop to a disappointing 4-3.

Here's what you need to know:

  • All eyes were on Peyton Manning on this night and he certainly did not disappoint. His 318 yards and four touchdowns led the way to a blowout win and, of course, his third score of the night saw him pass Brett Favre for first on the NFL's all-time passing touchdowns list.
  • The Broncos' running game also flashed with some production, led by Ronnie Hillman's 14 carries for 74 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Demaryius Thomas hauled in eight passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns, including Manning's record breaker late in the second quarter.
  • The offense was certainly the story of the night, but the Broncos' defense was just as dominant throughout the game. The unit tallied six sacks, including three from DeMarcus Ware and two from Von Miller, as well as an interception from Aqib Talib.
  • Colin Kaepernick's 263 yards, one touchdown and one interception makes for a decent stat line, but he and the 49ers' passing offense struggled to move the ball with much consistency.
  • The 49ers had difficulty running the ball for the second consecutive week, totaling only 62 yards on the ground.
  • Injuries certainly seem to be catching up to the 49ers' defense, as the 42 points they surrendered in the game made for the most they've given up since allowing the same total to the Seattle Seahawks in December 2012.
