Alex Smith's late drive carries Chiefs to win over Chargers

Jayne Kamin Oncea / USA TODAY Sports

Alex Smith led a nine-play drive, which ended with a 48-yard field goal by Cairo Santos with just 21 seconds left to carry the Kansas City Chiefs over the San Diego Chargers 23-20.

This game ended the Chargers' (5-2) five-game win streak and brings the Chiefs (3-3) to .500.

Here's what you need to know:

  • The Chiefs nearly doubled the Chargers in time of possession (39:00 to 21:00) controlled mainly by their run game that featured Jamaal Charles's 22 carries for 95 yards, Knile Davis's 10 carries for 25 yards and Smith rushing six times for 29 yards.
  • Jamaal Charles became the Chiefs' new all-time leading rusher in the first quarter on a 16-yard rushing score. He passed Priest Holmes who set the mark of 6,070 yards as a member of the team from 2001 to 2007.
  • San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers had his lowest yardage output of the season, throwing for 205 yards with a pair of touchdowns and one interception.
  • Alex Smith still has not thrown a touchdown pass to a wide receiver this season. He hit fullback Anthony Sherman on an 11-yard pass in the fourth quarter.
  • Brandon Flowers suffered a concussion in the game and did not return. He was first shaken after colliding with Charles on his touchdown run. He was tested and deemed unable to return later in the game.
