Geno Smith takes blame after close loss to Patriots

David Butler II / USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith has become a punchline this season. Despite playing his best game of the year Thursday, the Jets fell to 1-6 after a 27-25 loss to their AFC East rival New England Patriots.

The Jets had a chance to tie the game at 27 after Smith found tight end Jeff Cumberland for a 10-yard touchdown, but New York couldn't convert the ensuing two-point conversion when Smith failed to deliver a pass to tight end Jace Amaro.

The second-year quarterback took responsibility for the errant throw.

"Jace did a great job of getting open; I've got to give him a better ball," Smith told ESPN's Ian O'Connor. "That's completely on me."

Amaro wasn't at all pleased with the result of the play, putting the fault on Smith.

"I was open," Amaro said. "I just didn't have a chance to make the play. ... (The pass) was flat, and there wasn't any air on it. I tried to stick my hand up there and was a couple of inches away from it."

After losing six consecutive games, it won't get much easier for the Jets. New York hosts the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 26.
