Patriots escape with victory over Jets in a Thursday night thriller

Mark L. Baer / USA TODAY Sports

In a game that featured five lead changes the New England Patriots eventually escaped with a 27-25 win over the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football.

Geno Smith was outstanding down the stretch, but the Jets were unable to convert in the red zone early in the game and the Patriots took advantage.

Here's what you need to know:

  • The Patriots started their fifth different offensive line in seven games but only gave up one sack protecting Tom Brady as he threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Brady was playing in his 200th game. He has still yet to lose on a Thursday.
  • The Jets scored on their first five drives. They had scored on just three of their previous 26 drives. They ran the ball at will, racking up 218 yards on the Jerod Mayo-less Patriot defense.
  • Burning two timeouts in the third quarter because of pre-snap issues would come back to haunt the Jets as they could have used them on their final drive.
  • Geno Smith exited the game for one play before coming back to lead the Jets on a long touchdown drive in the fourth quarter.
  • The Jets missed an opportunity to tie the game with 2:31 to go on a missed 2-point conversion. Geno Smith overthrew Jace Amaro. The Jets have not scored on a 2-point conversion since 2010.
  • The Patriots' Chris Jones blocked a 58-yard field goal attempt by Nick Folk to win the game. It was Jones who was called for an unsportsmanlike penalty that allowed the Jets to make a field goal and beat the Patriots a season ago.
