Report: Buccaneers' McCown plans to avoid surgery

Melina Vastola / USA TODAY Sports

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh McCown is still trying to avoid surgery on his injured thumb.

According to Rick Stroud of The Tampa Bay Times, McCown says he is getting better, but is still not expected to play this week.

Buccaneers' head coach Lovie Smith was non-committal about who would start when both quarterbacks are healthy, so the team may not be looking to rush McCown back.

Second year pivot Mike Glennon led the team to a 27-24 comeback win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4, throwing for 302 yards and two touchdowns, while McCown has thrown for two touchdowns and four interceptions in three games, all of which were losses.
