Chiefs, Charles dominant in victory over Patriots

John Rieger / USA TODAY Sports

Jamaal Charles returned to vintage form, scoring three touchdowns, as the Kansas City Chiefs routed the New England Patriots 41-14 on Monday night.

Charles was held out of Week 3's game against the Miami Dolphins with a high ankle sprain, but was dominant from the first snap Monday.

Both the Chiefs and Patriots moved to 2-2.

Here's what you need to know ...

  • Charles was the story of the game, rushing for 92 yards and a touchdown while catching three passes for 16 yards and two touchdowns. The Chiefs' superstar looked like he's fully recovered from a high ankle sprain.
  • Knile Davis added 107 yards rushing, proving he's more than capable of stepping in when called upon.
  • The Patriots gave up more than 300 yards in the first half for the first time since Bill Belichick was named head coach in 2000.
  • Tom Brady had an awful night, to put it lightly. Brady went 14-for-23 for 159 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions while losing a fumble. After throwing a pick-six to Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah, Brady's night was over.
  • Patriots rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo took over with New England trailing 41-7. He threw his first career touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski, making it the first time the Patriots' tight end caught a touchdown pass from someone other than Brady.
  • Tamba Hali forced Brady to fumble deep in the Patriots' half during the third quarter. Charles scored his third touchdown of the game two plays later to put the Chiefs up 24-0.
  • Trailing 27-0, Brady connected on a 44-yard touchdown pass with Brandon LaFell. It was the Patriots' first second-half touchdown of the season.
  • With the loss, the Patriots fell into a three-way tie for first in the AFC East with the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins, all at 2-2.
