Report: Dolphins players told Tannehill will start Sunday vs. Raiders

Steve Mitchell / USA TODAY Sports

Any thought of the Miami Dolphins benching Ryan Tannehill in favor of Matt Moore may be premature.

According to Jeff Darlington of NFL Network, multiple Dolphins players have been told Tannehill will be starting this week against the Oakland Raiders. Said players have also disclosed that the team is preparing as if Tannehill will be the starter.

Head coach Joe Philbin was noncommittal earlier in the week about Tannehill continuing to start, but making the move to Moore isn't a long-term solution. Trying to get the most out of the former first-round pick Tannehill is the Dolphins' best shot of finishing 2014 strong.

Tannehill has struggled so far this season, his third as the Dolphins' starter. He's posted just a 56.5 completion percentage and 624 yards in three games.

Still, it's just the first month under new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, and making a quarterback change in September seems a little rash. Especially with the Dolphins at 1-2 in the still very winnable AFC East.
