Dolphins' Dion Jordan handed new 4-game suspension

Miami Dolphins defensive end Dion Jordan was suspended four games Thursday for violating the league's new substance abuse policy, the team announced Friday via its official website.

Jordan was suspended four games for a performance-enhancing drug violation in July, but that suspension was retracted Friday in favor of a new four-game suspension for a substance abuse violation.

NFL Network's Albert Breer explains.

The NFL implemented its new drug program Wednesday.

The second-year pro will now miss six games in total, having served the season's first two games under his initial sanction.

Jordan was selected third overall in 2013. He confirmed Breer's report that he has entered a treatment program.

“I am currently undergoing treatment to address my situation. I am working hard to become a better man and to make better choices," Jordan said.

Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said he and the Dolphins staff stand behind Jordan:

We were informed that Dion’s suspension for performance enhancing drugs was lifted, however, we also learned that he has been suspended four games for violating the Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances. While we were disappointed to learn of this result, we support Dion for proactively taking steps to voluntarily seek treatment to better himself. We will continue to support and work with him as he takes advantage of all available resources during this time.
