Sheldon Richardson apologizes for inadvertent timeout

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson has taken responsibility for an inadvertent timeout on a play that would have tied the game for the Jets on Sunday.

With New York trailing 31-24 late in the fourth quarter, Geno Smith launched a 36-yard touchdown strike to Jeremy Kerley. However, the touchdown was nullified because Richardson called a timeout before the snap.

According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, Richardson called timeout because he heard Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg calling for one.

Per NFL rules, only a head coach can call a timeout from the sideline. There has been no indication as to whether the league will review the incident.
