Jets' GM Idzik: Cutting Patterson was 'best thing for Jets'

Despite a thin secondary, general manager John Idzik says moving on from cornerback Dimitri Patterson was ''the best thing for the Jets'' after a bizarre week.

Patterson, expected to be a starter, was released by New York on Saturday as the team got to the mandatory 53-player limit. It capped a stretch in which Patterson was suspended after he went missing before the Jets' preseason game on Aug. 22 without speaking to anyone in the organization.

Patterson later said the Jets' claims were ''completely false.'' Idzik, in his first comments since cutting Patterson, says ''it wasn't good for the team to go forward (with the cornerback).''

As for releasing wide receiver Stephen Hill after two seasons, coach Rex Ryan says the team gave the 2012 second-rounder ''plenty of opportunity.''
