Dolphins' Jones learning from mistake after Michael Sam tweet

Miami Dolphins cornerback Don Jones drew a lot of anger in May when he tweeted "horrible" and "omg" following the St. Louis Rams' drafting of Michael Sam and Sam's subsequent reaction - a kiss with his partner.

Jones was suspended by the Dolphins for his tweet and ordered to undergo sensitivity training. One piece of information that was lost in the mix is that Jones actually has a gay brother and according to him, they have a great relationship.

"I don't have [a] problem with gay [people]," Jones told the Miami Herald. "Shoot, I do have a bunch of family members that are gay. My brother, my cousins. I never really had a problem."

There was a problem though, and that was Jones' poor decision and word choice on social media. He now regrets the tweet, but believes the sensitivity training helped him to be a better person.

"I didn't intend [any] harm," Jones said. "I just made a bad mistake. I had to learn from it. ... I learned I can't be judgmental, I have to respect what everybody's doing."

Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin has been encouraged by what he's seen of Jones since rejoining the Dolphins following his suspension.

"All the feedback we got from the educational piece was very positive. He's been a good teammate throughout, since he returned to the team," Philbin said. "I think he's a thoughtful individual. I think he understands the impact that actions and words can have on others. He's really done well."

Jones' poor decision was compounded by the struggles the Dolphins have had recently to provide a tolerant locker room. After the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin bullying scandal, having a player accused as a homophobe was the last thing the franchise needed. For his part, Jones doesn't believe that tag will be associated with him in the future.

"I definitely think all of it's behind me," Jones said. "I just try to move forward and go on as a team. I've learned. I feel pretty good."
