Report: Raiders exploring possibility of move to San Antonio

Unhappy with their current stadium situation in Oakland, the Raiders are exploring a number of options for the future and that includes investigating the possibility of a move to San Antonio, according to a report from the San Antonio Express-News.

Raiders owner Mark Davis was in San Antonio for two or three days earlier this month and met with several prominent members of the local community, including former mayor Henry Cisneros (thought to be the meeting's planner), city manager Sheryl Sculley and then-mayor Julian Castro (Castro resigned as mayor last week).

While San Antonio has been used in the past as a way for a team to drum up support from its current home, the report indicates that Davis' inquiry is "at least somewhat more serious" than previous attempts.

Davis and other staff reportedly visited the Alamodome during the San Antonio visit, the likely temporary home of the Raiders should they decide to move from Oakland. The Alamodome would require some upgrades including the addition of luxury suites, but would only be used for a few years until a new stadium could be completed.

In order to move, Oakland would require the approval of 24 of the league's other 31 owners and that includes the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans, teams that may not appreciate another team based in Texas. It also may be difficult to convince the other owners to sign off on a move from the sixth largest media market in the nation to No. 37.

NFL senior vice president of communications Greg Aiello also had no comment on the potential move when contacted by the Express-News.

"We don't have any information about [Davis' meeting in San Antonio], so there is no reason for us to comment," Aiello said. "We have received no applications from any of our teams to relocate at this point, so there is nothing for us to respond to."
