Top pick Clowney hints he could draw start in Texans' preseason opener

Aug 7, 2:58 PM

Jadeveon Clowney will play in the Houston Texans' preseason opener Saturday. That much we know, because Clowney said so Thursday.

“Oh yeah, I’ll be playing,” the No. 1 overall draft pick told reporters, via CSNHouston.com.

What we don't know is how much Clowney will see the field. It sounds like he hopes to get his action in early.

Clowney even indicated there's a chance he could start the game.

“Yeah … hopefully,” he answered when quizzed about his chances of lining up on the field for the first play.

Texans coach Bill O'Brien - the man who actually gets to decide when and how much Clowney plays - sounded much less certain of Clowney's role.

“He’ll start? Really?” O’Brien said. “That’s news to me. We’ll find out when the game starts.”

Ultimately, it matters little whether Clowney starts in the preseason. What matters is what role he plays come Week 1. For now, all indications are that the No. 1 pick will play a big role with the Texans' first-team defense.

Texans' Clowney played through sports hernia last season at South Carolina

Jun 26, 5:39 PM

When Jadeveon Clowney's play slipped last year at South Carolina, many people assumed it was a result of Clowney taking things easy to make sure he didn't suffer a serious injury before making it to the NFL. The down season (compared to the year Clowney put up in 2012) didn't stop him from being the No. 1 overall pick anyway.

According to what Clowney said during the rookie symposium Thursday, there may have been more of a reason behind his relatively poor performance.

Clowney underwent surgery to repair the sports hernia earlier this month, so if it was bothering him all last season it's curious he waited this long to repair the injury. Perhaps the issue was only diagnosed once he joined the Houston Texans and it explained the pain he experienced while with the Gamecocks.

No matter when the injury actually occurred, the important thing for the Texans is when Clowney will be able to step on to the field. He hopes to be ready for training camp to allow as much time as possible to prepare for his move to outside linebacker.

Texans' Clowney unsure if he'll be ready for training camp

Jun 19, 1:45 PM

The Houston Texans were confident linebacker Jadeveon Clowney would be ready to go for training camp after he underwent sports hernia surgery.

When Clowney arrived in Houston he underwent groin surgery and remains day-to-day.

Clowney will remain in Houston for most of the summer and continue to workout. Head coach Bill O'Brien insists the linebacker is on track to join the team for training camp in July.

Texans' Clowney has sports hernia surgery, will 'be ready to go for training camp'

Jun 13, 1:45 PM

Houston Texans linebacker Jadeveon Clowney underwent a minor surgical procedure.

Clowney had sports hernia surgery on Thursday.

Texans head coach Bill O'Brien says the number one overall pick in May's NFL Draft will not miss any regular season time.

"He'll be ready to go for training camp," O'Brien said.

"We sent him to Philadelphia to have it checked out by specialists there," he added. "We decided the best thing for [Jadeveon] and the best thing for our team, and the best thing for our organization was to have sports hernia surgery. So he had that yesterday, he'll be back this afternoon."

The Texans open training camp in late July.

Last Friday, Clowney signed his rookie contract guaranteeing him around $22.3 million over the next four years.
