Report: Saints place Delvin Breaux on IR

Chuck Cook / USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Saints have placed cornerback Delvin Breaux on injured reserve with a fractured fibula, a source told ESPN's Field Yates.

Breaux is eligible to be a short-term IR player, meaning he could be brought back to the roster after eight weeks.

The Saints fired team doctors for supposedly improperly diagnosing Breaux's fibula this summer, but the New Orleans hospital system that employs them later ruled the medical staff handled the injury correctly.

The 27-year-old was the Saints' top corner in 2016 and was expected to anchor one of the sidelines for the team again this season. In his absence, rookie Marshon Lattimore and third-year defender P.J. Williams will be asked to carry the bulk of the load.

Breaux also missed six games with a broken fibula last season.
