Jets told McCown not to speak with media after preseason game vs. Lions

For reasons unknown, the Jets didn't want Josh McCown to talk to the media after a preseason game Saturday against the Detroit Lions in which the veteran didn't play so New York could evaluate its young quarterbacks.

McCown was "amenable to chatting" after the 16-6 loss, but was told "don't talk" by a member of the Jets' PR staff, according to Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News.

The 38-year-old obliged, leaving the media to wonder what the Jets were worried he'd say. McCown is a 15-year veteran who is well-versed in avoiding controversy, as he's spent most of his career as a backup or a stopgap starter.

Christian Hackenberg failed to impress in McCown's absence, while Bryce Petty fared a little better, though likely not well enough to push him into serious contention for the starting job.
