Browns rookie Kizer shares 1st-team reps at 1st day of minicamp

Don't look now, but rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer is taking first-team reps with the Cleveland Browns.

On the first day of minicamp on Tuesday, the Browns' second-round pick in this year's draft split time leading the first-team offense at practice with sophomore Cody Kessler.

It's a noteworthy development that the rookie was afforded an opportunity to play with the starters on the first day of his first-ever minicamp, but head coach Hue Jackson tried his best to downplay the decision.

"Honestly, it hasn't changed. That is the way it has been since OTAs have started. You guys (the media) just had an opportunity to see it so I think the players will tell you nothing has changed," Jackson said after the practice.

"We are just mixing and matching and giving guys opportunities. As I told you, I am going to find out about our guys. That is what I have to do over these next couple of days before we go to training camp and as we get into training camp."

Kessler is expected to begin training camp as the team's No. 1 quarterback, but Jackson said it's still too soon to set anything in stone. Kessler was productive in his nine games and eight starts in 2016, completing 65 percent of his passes and throwing six touchdown passes against two picks.

Kizer, a 6-foot-4 stud out of Notre Dame, was the fourth quarterback selected in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Browns also have Brock Osweiler aboard after a stunning offseason trade with the Houston Texans.

Cleveland's quarterback situation will be one to watch during camp battles.
