Redskins take 2nd straight Alabama product in Ryan Anderson

Brett Davis / USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Redskins have selected outside linebacker Ryan Anderson out of Alabama with the 49th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Anderson is the second consecutive Alabama prospect taken by Washington after drafting defensive lineman Jonathan Allen in the first round. He was the sixth player from Alabama selected in this year's draft.

Anderson is an explosive player rushing off the edge and has a tremendous burst off the line. He will likely compete to start as a strong side linebacker opposite Ryan Kerrigan in training camp.

Ryan Anderson Bio:

Position: OLB
School: Alabama
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-2
Weight: 253 lbs.

Strengths

  • Parlayed his opportunity for increased playing time in 2016 into an 8.5-sack year that included 18.5 tackles for loss.
  • Stout run-defender who can be relied upon to hold his ground and set the edge.
  • Wins with a high motor.

Weaknesses

  • Lacks desired athleticism to be a top-tier pass-rusher at the next level.
  • Those limitations, confirmed by underwhelming workout scores, could also impact his ability to drop back and contribute in coverage.
  • Size and skill set will likely only make him a fit for the edge in a 3-4 front.
