The New York Giants have exercised their fifth-year contract option on star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., Kimberly Jones of NFL Media reports.

A no-brainer decision if ever there was one, the chances of the Giants not capitalizing on this opportunity were nonexistent. Tacking another season on to Beckham's original rookie deal keeps him under contract through 2018.

The two sides will presumably open talks for a lucrative contract extension well before that time, now he at least tentatively remains on the books at an affordable rate.

Beckham has been one of the NFL's premier receivers since joining the Giants as a first-round pick in 2014. An eventual long-term deal in New York would almost certainly reward him as such, and could make him the highest-paid player at the position.

Suiting up for 43 regular-season games over his first three seasons, the LSU product has racked up an impressive 288 receptions for 4,122 yards and 35 touchdowns.
