Texans GM: No pressure to draft QB high, but will add another before camp

Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith knows how to sit on a fence.

As the football world collectively scoffs at his stance that the Texans are fine at quarterback, Smith is keeping his options open and confidence high among his prospective signal-callers.

With rumors swirling that the Texans could draft Notre Dame pass-thrower DeShone Kizer or Texas Tech product Patrick Mahomes, who is reportedly loved by head coach Bill O'Brien, Smith isn't pigeonholing his first selection.

"I don't feel pressure," Smith told USA Today's Lindsay H. Jones about drafting a quarterback in the first round.

Smith said he's comfortable with the team moving forward with Tom Savage as their starting quarterback. Savage played in three games for the Texans last season, completing 46-of-73 passes for 461 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

"I think he's proven that he understands this offense and I think he's proven he can play at a high level," Smith said.

The Texans look to have a championship-ready roster, outside of the quarterback position, and had hoped to get Tony Romo after trading Brock Osweiler and his hefty contract in March. With Romo retired, the Texans have two quarterbacks on the roster between Savage and backup Brandon Weeden.

While Smith doesn't "feel pressure" to spend a high pick on a quarterback, he admitted that another will be added to the roster before training camp.

"Our intention is to go to camp with three," Smith said. "We'll get that done before we head to training camp."
