More than six years since his last NFL action, Glen Coffee's sights are set on a return to football.

The former 49ers running back, who retired following his rookie season, has been reinstated by the league and was waived by San Francisco on Friday, agent Duray Oubre told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Coffee went to Army Ranger School following his surprise decision to walk away from the NFL. He served in the infantry for almost four years after enlisting in 2013. This official comeback attempt comes just over a week prior to his 30th birthday.

The former Alabama standout was selected by the 49ers in the third round, No. 74 overall, in the 2009 draft. He started two of 14 appearances as a rookie, tallying 83 carries for 226 yards and one touchdown.
