Alex Smith expects Chiefs to add QB: 'Someone's coming in'

Alex Smith has been around the NFL long enough to learn the trends of building a roster.

On the first day of the Kansas City Chiefs' offseason workouts, Smith did a quick head count and realized he should be expecting a little more competition to be added before the season.

"This is the NFL, I’ve been playing long enough," Smith said Monday, according to Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star. "You pretty quickly realize we have three guys right now in the quarterback room, right? We're a guy short. Someone's coming in."

Smith is currently joined in the quarterback room by second-year pro Joel Stave and fifth-year backup Tyler Bray, neither of whom has thrown an NFL pass.

Head coach Andy Reid can also see another quarterback coming into the mix, though he wouldn't make a solid commitment.

"We have three on the roster now and we'll see how the fourth one goes or where he comes from," said Reid.

Smith has been the Chiefs' starting quarterback for the past four seasons, posting a winning record in each and making three postseason appearances. He's not worried about another arm to compete with.

"It's out of our hands, so in a sense, any anxiety you might have over it is pointless, to be honest," Smith said.
