Patriots continue to stock up on edge rushers with Deatrich Wise Jr.

The New England Patriots have selected defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. out of Arkansas in the fourth round (131st overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Strengths

  • Strong upper body. Uses hard hands to establish position against blockers, and can easily control blocks from undersized linemen and tight ends.

  • Effort. Opts to use power on regular basis and takes pride in standing his ground. Motor constantly going despite below-average speed.

Weaknesses

  • Doesn't have speed to be edge rusher at NFL level. May be better suited to play inside, where he can rely on power.
  • After shining as a junior in 2015, Wise's production fell off as a senior, which saw him lose playing time throughout the year.
