Redskins add defensive anchor with Jonathan Allen

John David Mercer / USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Redskins have selected defensive lineman Jonathan Allen out of Alabama with the 17th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Allen captured the Chuck Bednarik Trophy and Bronko Nagurski Trophy during his final year at Alabama, two awards recognizing the nation's best defensive player. The defensive end was also named SEC Defensive Player of the Year.

During his senior year, Allen recorded 10.5 sacks and three fumble recoveries, steering Alabama to the national championship game.

Jonathan Allen Bio

Position: DL
School: Alabama
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-3
Weight: 286 lbs.

Strengths

  • As polished a defensive player as there is in the draft.
  • Can play both outside and inside with great proficiency.
  • Extremely active and coordinated; has speed to close on running backs.
  • Exceptional in using hands to shed blockers.

Weaknesses

  • Lacks the ideal length most teams look for in a defensive end - could struggle against long offensive tackles.
  • Has been surrounded by exceptional talent at college level, so teams couldn't build game plan around stopping him.
  • Would likely have to add a good deal of size to play inside.
