Bengals end DE Carl Lawson's fall in 4th round

John Reed / USA TODAY Sports

The Cincinnati Bengals have selected defensive end Carl Lawson out of Auburn in the fourth round (116th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The best player remaining on some analysts' draft boards, Lawson likely fell to the fourth round because of medical concerns. He's had hip and ACL surgeries.

Lawson is a powerful player when healthy and has a chance to be precisely the sort of depth that the pass-rushing-deficient Bengals need.

Carl Lawson Bio

Position: DE
School: Auburn
College Experience: Junior
Height: 6-2
Weight: 261 lbs.

Strengths

  • Aggressive: Fights through any chip blocks thrown his way. Leans forward into rush moves. Good burst off the line.
  • Looks the part: Workout warrior with chiseled physique, ideal upper-body strength.
  • Versatility: Can rush from inside or outside, standing up or with hand on the ground. Can play different roles in different schemes.

Weaknesses

  • Injuries: Missed sophomore season with ACL tear and six games as a junior with hip issue.
  • Leverage: Has a tendency to play high, needs to find ways to bring his whole body closer to the ground.
  • Predictable: Makes similar pass-rush moves throughout the game. Can get stuck in a rhythm of doing the same thing play after play.
