49ers fortify pass rush by selecting Thomas

Kirby Lee / USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers have selected defensive end Solomon Thomas out of Stanford with the third overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Thomas will immediately improve the 49ers' pass rush, joining fellow former first-round picks Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner along the defensive line.

The former Stanford product is equally adept at playing as a 3-4 outside linebacker or 4-3 defensive end, giving the 49ers a measure of flexibility as they rebuild their defense.

Thomas boasts a multitude of pass rush moves and is considered the first building block of new general manager John Lynch's regime.

Solomon Thomas Bio

Position: DE
School: Stanford
College Experience: Junior
Height: 6-3
Weight: 273 lbs.

Strengths

  • Balanced. Thomas shows a rare blend of size and speed, using every weapon in his arsenal and multitude of pass-rush moves to keep blockers on their toes.
  • Versatility. Equally strong against the run and the pass. Can play as a 4-3 end, kicking inside from time to time, or as a 3-4 outside linebacker.
  • Violent. There is intent behind every move he makes. Relentlessly punishes opposing blockers with an abrupt, strong, unpredictable style.

Weaknesses

  • Work ethic. Has a tendency to take some plays off if his first move doesn't work.
  • Leverage. Shows ability to stay low and use leverage, but not on consistent basis, allowing him to get swallowed up by larger lineman.
