Colts sign Johnathan Hankins to reported 3-year, $30M deal
The Indianapolis Colts signed free-agent defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, the team announced Thursday.
The contract is a three-year deal worth $30 million, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, citing a source.
Hankins, who was arguably the top available player a few weeks into the offseason, reportedly receives $14.5 million in guarantees as part of his payday, Schefter adds.
The move comes one day after a report suggested the Colts were unlikely to strike a deal with Hankins following his free-agent visit.
The 25-year-old was a starter in all 16 games for the New York Giants' 10th-ranked defense last season. He represents a major upgrade to what's long been an area of concern in Indianapolis.
Hankins' presence on the inside, both in run defenses and when it comes to creating pressure in the passing game, could allow new general manager Chris Ballard to address one of many other roster needs early in this year's draft.
The most productive season of the former second-round pick's young career came in 2014, when he racked up seven sacks and 51 tackles.
