49ers trade up to select RB Joe Williams

The San Francisco 49ers have selected running back Joe Williams out of Utah in the fourth round (121st overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The 49ers sent the Colts the 143rd and 161st overall picks to move up.

Williams actually retired from football in college in early September, only to return in mid-October after Utah suffered a rash of injuries.

Strengths

  • Blazing speed with explosive burst and long speed to run away from corners and safeties for days.
  • Changes direction exceptionally well, uses explosive cuts to elude defenders, and creates space for himself at last possible moment.
  • Possesses the size and physical attributes necessary to succeed as a between-the-tackles runner.

Weaknesses

  • Sometimes runs into tackles due to lack of patience while approaching line of scrimmage.
  • Non-factor in passing game.
  • Ball security has been a problem.
  • Commitment to football was questioned after taking a brief retirement during 2016 season.
  • Was dismissed from UConn amid off-field issues.
