Free-agent running back Adrian Peterson will leave New England without a deal in place with the Patriots, sources told ESPN's Field Yates.

The 32-year-old made a trip to Foxboro on Monday and had previously stated that "finding the best fit and helping a team win a championship" are his only free-agent desires. Signing with the defending NFL champions represents an ideal situation for Peterson.

Yates noted that the two sides could keep discussions open.

The Minnesota Vikings parted ways with Peterson ahead of free agency, while the Patriots added running back Rex Burkhead on a one-year deal in early March.
