McVay defends Gurley: 'The running game isn't always on the running back'
After impressing everyone in the football world through his college career and rookie season, Todd Gurley proved he has talent.
A spotty sophomore season has cast doubt on the Los Angeles Rams running back's abilities - but his new coach has lots of belief the young runner can turn it around.
"You look at his first two years, the body of work, the guy's a natural talent," Rams head coach Sean McVay told Sirius XM NFL radio. "I think he's motivated. Clearly, (the Rams) as a team last year didn't achieve the things that (they) wanted to.
"And I think one of the things you tell people, especially when you're just looking at the run game, it takes all 11. I think people have the tendency to always place sacks on an offensive line; those take all 11. But the running game isn't always on the running back as well."
After being named a second-team All-Pro as a rookie, Gurley ran for 885 yards and six touchdowns in 2016, failing to record a 100-yard game all season.
Without Gurley leading the charge, the Rams had the 32nd-ranked offense and 31st-ranked rushing attack last season.
