Cardinals get athletic defender in Haason Reddick

Justin Ford / USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Cardinals selected linebacker Haason Reddick out of Temple with the 13th pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Temple product's selection is a heart-warming story as he came to college as a walk-on and worked his way to gaining top-10 draft consideration after an impressive combine workout.

Reddick's role in the Cardinals' defense likely won't be determined until training camp as he can play as an edge rusher or an off-ball linebacker.

Haason Reddick Bio

Position: OLB
School: Temple
College Experience: Redshirt Senior
Height: 6-1
Weight: 237 lbs.

Strengths

  • Reddick displays an excellent burst off the snap and takes great routes to attack the quarterback.
  • Recorded 22.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks during his final year at Temple.
  • Uses his tremendous closing speed in coverage to disrupt short-to-intermediate passes.
  • Flies around the corner and doesn't lose top speed while circling opposing tackles.

Weaknesses

  • Reddick is undersized for a prototypical NFL edge rusher and will need to gain weight moving forward.
  • Will get driven out of the play far too often by opposing linemen and tight ends.
  • Reddick routinely overruns plays and misses tackles due to his overzealousness.
  • Relies mainly on his pure speed and athleticism, and will need to develop an array of pass-rush moves.
