The Washington Redskins want to get a long-term deal done with quarterback Kirk Cousins, but they don't mind waiting.

Team president Bruce Allen reiterated his team's plans to sign Cousins to a multi-year contract Tuesday, claiming the organization has reached a "100-percent" consensus that they prefer the quarterback to be locked down long term.

"It'll take some time," Allen told 980-AM radio, according to NFL.com's Chris Wesseling. "We've obviously proposed, and we want a long-term marriage with him."

Washington handed Cousins the franchise tag for the second year, and, according to Allen, they could tag him for a third straight season if necessary.

"Really we have him under contract for this year and an option for next year," Allen said, implying the team is ready to pay him $34.5 million on the tag in 2018. "That's not the worst thing for the franchise ...

"We want what's right for Kirk. We want what's right for the Washington Redskins. ... We have plenty of time to work on that."

The team is still operating without a general manager after dismissing Scot McCloughan on the first day of free agency, and hasn't shown much urgency to find a new one.
