Steelers take hometown hero, cancer survivor James Conner

Ray Carlin-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected running back James Conner out of Pitt in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Conner will likely be a fan favorite in Pittsburgh after starring at Pitt and famously overcoming cancer in 2016. The Erie, Penn., native won the ACC Player of the Year award in 2014 when he rushed for 1,765 yards and 26 touchdowns.

He gives the Steelers a solid complement to Le'Veon Bell after the team let DeAngelo Williams leave in free agency. Conner's large frame gives the Steelers a more powerful rushing style than Bell offers.
