Garrett: Cowboys still in 'wait-and-see mode' regarding Romo's future

Tony Romo is still a member of the Dallas Cowboys now over two weeks into free agency, and a timeline for his long-expected departure remains very much unclear.

Asked about the veteran quarterback at the league meetings Monday, head coach Jason Garrett indicated there's been no movement on that front.

"It's really unchanged," Garrett told NFL Network's Steve Wyche. "He's still part of our roster. We haven't made any roster moves with Tony at this point. So it's just status quo right now."

The expectation heading into the offseason was that the Cowboys would move on from Romo either by way of a trade or an outright release. Barring a retirement, the two sides parting ways is still almost certainly in the plans.

Dallas evidently won't be providing any insight as to why a solution has been put off this long, though.

"Tony's been a good quarterback for us for a long time," Garrett said. "We're working through his situation. The players aren't back for the offseason program yet, so we're just in a wait-and-see mode about what his status is going to be going forward."

The Denver Broncos were also thought to be in the mix for his services, but a recent report from ESPN's Jeff Darlington indicated that Romo believes he'll be choosing between playing for the Houston Texans and calling it a career.

With television networks reportedly attempting to bring him aboard, potentially providing him with an ideal post-playing-career transition, perhaps the holdup is at least partially a result of Romo weighing his options.

he 36-year-old remains a top quarterback talent when healthy, but he's now coming off a two-year stretch in which injuries limited him to just four starts.
