Titans find Mariota a top target with Corey Davis

Bill Streicher / USA TODAY Sports

Marcus Mariota has himself a new weapon.

The Tennessee Titans opted to address one of their most glaring needs with the first of two opening-round picks in the 2017 NFL Draft, selecting wide receiver Corey Davis out of Western Michigan at No. 5 overall.

Davis, widely considered to be the top receiver in a deep class of talent at the position, should be quick to emerge as the No. 1 target for a passing game that continues to trend in the right direction with Mariota leading the way.

The pick comes despite the fact that a foot injury kept Davis out of all pre-draft workouts, a testament to everything he showed during a productive college career.

Corey Davis Bio

Position: WR
School: Western Michigan
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-3
Weight: 209 lbs.

Strengths

  • Big, physical receiver with good speed who is able to wrestle the ball away from defensive backs.
  • Uses good footwork to avoid jams at the line of scrimmage and create free releases.
  • Hard to bring down and dangerous after the catch.
  • Difficult to match up with in the red zone.
  • Vertical threat that has big play capabilities. Has the ability to dominate 1-on-1 matchups on deep balls.
  • Terrific numbers in four years at Western Michigan. Improved catches and receiving yards totals every year.

Weaknesses

  • Didn't often play Power 5 competition while with the Broncos.
  • Could be more aggressive as a run blocker.
  • Drops an issue at times. Needs to secure ball before turning up field.
  • Could stand to add some bulk to his frame. Won't be able to dominate corners as easily at the next level.

Due to an injury, Davis was unable to participate in any events during the combine or Western Michigan's pro day.
