Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said Friday that he intends to exercise the fifth-year option in wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin's rookie contract, according to Max Henson of the team's official site.

When Benjamin's option is picked up, he'll be contracted through the 2018 season.

After missing his second season in the league due to injury in 2015, Benjamin bounced back with a solid campaign, catching 63 passes for 941 yards and seven touchdowns. However, he remains inconsistent game to game and lacks the complete skill set of a No. 1 target.

Whether Benjamin can establish himself as an upper-echelon receiver remains to be seen, but by exercising his option, the Panthers will have more time to evaluate the young pass-catcher.
