Panthers lock up Stewart to 1-year extension

The Carolina Panthers have signed starting running back Jonathan Stewart to a one-year contract extension, meaning he's now contracted through the 2018 season, the team announced Friday.
Prior to his extension, Stewart's 2017 cap number was $8.25 million, so this extra year presumably lessens that figure.
The 30-year-old remained effective in 2016, rushing for 824 yards and nine touchdowns in 13 games.
The Panthers could still look to draft a running back high this April, as they look to lessen the load on Cam Newton, but Stewart's extension ensures the team will have a veteran presence in the backfield for the foreseeable future.
