Jeffery denies reaching out to Adam Schefter before signing with Eagles

Alshon Jeffery doesn't want any one taking credit for his decisions.

In a recent piece by Sports Illustrated's Tim Rohan, ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter was followed around for 24 hours as he sorted through the craziness that is free agency.

At 11:09 a.m. ET of the day in record, Rohan claimed that Schefter was contacted by then-free-agent receiver Jeffery, who was looking for information to help him decide where to land in free agency.

In the middle of Schefter's flurry of calls, Alshon Jeffery rings him, wanting to know how much money the other free-agent receivers are making. ... Schefter goes through the contract numbers on Smith, Jackson, and Pierre Garcon, slowly, so Jeffery can apparently write them down. ... Schefter asks where Jeffery is going. Jeffery doesn't have an answer yet. Schefter asks that Jeffery notify him when he does make a decision and leaves the conversation at that.

Jeffery ended up signing a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, but after seeing Rohan's story, he took to Twitter to set the record straight.

It's not uncommon for players to deny stories about themselves, whether they are true or not, but Rohan's account does raise questions about how the player and reporter interacted on free-agency day.

First of all, typically the player's agent would be the one to reach out to reporters and teams about contract values, not a player directly contacting the media.

Second, Rohan claims that when Schefter spoke to Jeffery on the phone he gave some advice that would normally be given to a player by their agent, not a member of the media.

"It's all about the guarantee, Alshon," Schefter said, according to Rohan. "It's all about the guarantee … Your average per year could be $100 million. It doesn't matter. If they're going to guarantee you the majority of the contract, that's what you want."

While the interaction seems like an odd one and Jeffery is denying it happened, this could all be part of Schefter's unique way of doing things in the NFL world that has made him so successful and given him an extraordinary reporting reach.
