Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar said it was not his intention to insult Dwight Clark when making a joke about his recent ALS diagnosis.

Clark, who's most famous for "The Catch" as a member of the San Francisco 49ers, served as the Browns' GM from 1998-2002. The two-time Super Bowl champion revealed his ALS diagnosis on March 19.

Kosar made a distasteful comment about Clark's disease in a radio appearance Wednesday.

"We had a bad weekend with Gale Sayers being diagnosed (with dementia) ... Dwight Clark with ALS," Kosar said on WKNR, ESPN-Cleveland. "I could make a joke about his struggles in picking players when he was here. It almost makes me wonder if maybe it started earlier."

Kosar attempted to retract his comments via Twitter later in the evening:

It's a cruel comment from Kosar, and it seems unlikely that it won't be perceived any way but offensive.
