Panthers follow McCaffrey selection by adding versatile weapon Samuel

Greg Bartram / USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers have selected wide receiver Curtis Samuel out of Ohio State with the 40th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

And just like that, the Panthers have completely transformed their offensive personality.

It started with the selection of Christian McCaffrey in the first round, a versatile running back who is just as deadly as a receiver.

That same description applies to Samuel, whose speed and elusiveness was used in the Buckeyes' running game, passing game, and return game.

Cam Newton was probably the fastest player on the Panthers' offense last season, which was a problem. That is not the case any longer.

Curtis Samuel Bio

Position: WR
School: Ohio State
College Experience: Junior
Height: 5-11
Weight: 196 lbs.

Strengths

  • Versatile. Played running back and receiver at Ohio State.
  • Outstanding speed. Second-fastest 40-yard dash time among offensive players at combine.
  • Has speed to be a burner on the outside and quickness to get open from the slot. Tough to catch in the open field.
  • Natural change-of-direction skills make him a surprisingly precise route-runner for a converted running back.

Weaknesses

  • Not experienced as a traditional receiver. Got the majority of his touches out of the backfield.
  • Struggles to create separation from physical defenders and press coverage. Can get pushed around from time to time.
  • Not a natural hands catcher. A lot of passes caught with his body or deflected off his hands.
