Chargers grab potential star WR Mike Williams

Mark J. Rebilas / USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers have selected wide receiver Mike Williams out of Clemson with the seventh pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Williams' addition will be a popular one with quarterback Philip Rivers, as the star pivot has been without a true No. 1 receiver for years.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder is one of the most physical receivers in the draft, showing numerous times throughout his career at Clemson that he's virtually unstoppable in jump-ball situations.

Williams rebounded from a terrible neck injury suffered in 2015 to lead the Tigers in receiving with 1,361 yards and 11 touchdowns in his junior campaign. He was at his best in the national championship game against Alabama, catching eight passes for 94 yards and a touchdown in the win over the Crimson Tide.

Strengths

  • Uses size to lean into smaller cornerbacks, and high-points the ball with ease.
  • Physically imposing. Can bounce off would-be tacklers and carry smaller defenders with the ball in his hands.
  • Solid body control allows for adjustments to inaccurate throws, and for making catches over top of defenders.

Weaknesses

  • Sloppy route-runner.
  • Trouble creating separation from cornerbacks in man coverage.
  • Weak blocker despite ideal size.
  • Mediocre speed that could be a problem against NFL-quality corners.
