Report: Cousins expected to sign franchise tag

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins is expected to sign the franchise tag soon, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The Redskins placed the tag on Cousins in February, making him the first quarterback to receive the designation in consecutive years. Cousins did not sign the tender, which would pay him $23.9 million for the 2017 season.

Cousins was linked to the San Francisco 49ers after Kyle Shanahan accepted the head coaching position. Shanahan coached Cousins during his tenure as Redskins offensive coordinator from 2012-13.

The 28-year-old completed 67 percent of his passes last season for 4,917 yards and 25 touchdowns against 12 interceptions, earning the first Pro Bowl selection of his career.

Getting Cousins to sign the tag would add a measure of stability to a franchise in flux. Washington fired general manager Scot McCloughan on Thursday, shortly after presenting head coach Jay Gruden with a two-year extension.
