Report: McCown visiting with Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys will host quarterback Josh McCown on a free-agent visit Wednesday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The reported visit could signal Dallas is prepared to move on from veteran signal-caller Tony Romo, or the team brass may simply be preparing for all scenarios. If Romo is in fact destined for another locale, though, the Cowboys will need a new backup quarterback.

Dak Prescott will enter 2017 as the unquestioned starter, a development that appears to have made his predecessor expendable.

The Cowboys have pursued McCown before, but that was to take over for Romo after he suffered a back injury last preseason, and before Prescott staked his claim on the job.

At this point in his 4-year career, he won't challenge for a starting position, but he does offer clubs value as a competent secondary option. He's started 11 games over the past two seasons as a member of the Cleveland Browns.

As for Romo, keeping him in Dallas would result in a $24-million hit against the cap. It's likely the Cowboys will either trade or release the oft-injured passer.
