The Denver Broncos are gearing up for the possibility that a star talent at the most important position on the field becomes available.

General manager John Elway and his front office staff are ready to pursue Tony Romo if he's released by Dallas Cowboys this offseason, Mike Klis of 9News reports, citing multiple league sources.

A previous report, also from Klis, indicated that the club would "at least discuss" the possibility of signing Romo if he hit the open market. The latest update would appear to suggest that Denver has warmed up to the idea as offseason plans begin take shape.

If healthy, Romo would provide the Broncos with a major short-term upgrade over the likes of Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch under center. Whether he can stay on the field remains a concern after playing just four games in the past two seasons, but the potential reward could certainly outweight the risk in this scenario.

Looking back on the 2016 season, where a still-dominant defense guided the Broncos to a 9-7 record, it's reasonable to suggest that the Broncos are a quarterback away from being a Super Bowl favorite.

The logical assumption is that Romo would have to be interested in such an opportunity, and Klis cites an agent source in adding that the veteran signal-caller's preferred destination is Denver.

Romo will presumably be released in the event that the Cowboys are unable to work out a trade in exchange for draft capital. At that point, the Broncos would likely be one of many contenders vying for his services.

The 36-year-old was playing at a particularly high level in his last full season, finishing the 2014 campaign with completions on 69.9 percent of passes for 3,705 yards, 34 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions.
