Jaguars will wait until May deadline to decide on Bortles' option

The Jacksonville Jaguars apparently need more time to assess whether Blake Bortles is worthy of the team exercising the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.

Jaguars general manager David Caldwell said Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine that Jacksonville will wait until "closer to May" to make the decision about Bortles' deal, according to Sal Capaccio of WGR550.

Teams have until May to decide whether to pick up the option on rookies' deals.

Bortles regressed severely in 2016, calling his future as the Jaguars' starting quarterback into question.

The team has insisted during the offseason that it remains confident in the young pivot, but the fact this isn't a slam-dunk decision speaks volumes.
