The Chicago Bears are widely expected to release quarterback Jay Cutler this offseason, but cannot do so until the passer receives medical clearance, ESPN's Jeff Dickerson reports.

Cutler had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder in December.

Bears general manager called Cutler's status with the team "fluid" at the NFL combine Wednesday, adding that the team's close relationship with Cutler's agent means both sides can be "honest and transparent."

Pace added: "(Cutler) is far along in his rehab. I wouldn't say he's there yet, but he's definitely ahead of (schedule). He hasn't gotten to that point yet (where he's been medically cleared), but he's ahead of schedule."

Pace made it clear no final decision has been made on Cutler's future with the team, but with no guaranteed money left on Cutler's deal it would be truly stunning if the two sides don't part ways as soon as Cutler can pass a physical.
