Report: Broncos expected to 'at least discuss' pursuit of Romo, if released

Tim Heitman / USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos will continue to say that they're committed to a competition between Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. And as things currently stand, perhaps they truly are.

But all indications are that such a stance could change if a certain veteran signal-caller ends up hitting the free-agent market.

Denver is expected to "at least discuss" a pursuit of Tony Romo in the event he's released by the Dallas Cowboys, according to Mike Klis of 9News.

This latest update falls in line from a January report, also from Klis, which indicated that the Broncos would be open to acquiring Romo by way of free agency.

While there's still a chance that a cap-rich team offers up a conditional pick to avoid competing for his services on the open market, something the Broncos are reportedly unwilling to do, the significant contract numbers in his current contract make it far more likely that Romo is indeed released.

That's when things could really get interesting among the top teams in the AFC.

Adding Romo would draw immediate comparisons to the blockbuster signing of Peyton Manning back in 2012.

Like Manning, Romo is coming off injury issues that have many doubting his chances of any sort of sustained success. But there's also that same realistic chance that he puts the team over the top.

Subpar quarterback play saw the Broncos waste another historically dominant defensive performance last season en route to a 9-7 finish and their first playoff absence since 2010. Health provided, Romo's presence under center could have Denver locked back in as a Super Bowl favorite over night.

It's fair to assume that, given his choice of teams on the open market, such an opportunity would have to be enticing for a 36-year-old on the last legs of his NFL career.

Might we have a match in the making?
